Name: Barrell Whiskey Batch 001
Nose: Maple Syrup, Fresh Bread, Vanilla, Wood
Palate: Cinnamon, Maple Syrup, Bread, Butter, Corn, and Rye
Finish: Moderate and spicy with a rich chocolate flavor
Overall: This review is specifically for Barrell Whiskey Batch 001 Bottle 4541 pictured above and below. On the nose the whiskey doesn’t smell as strong as the label indicates. The aroma is reminiscent of a bakery or pastry shop with the smell of fresh bread and maple syrup up front as well as some earthy aromas. At first sip you can tell the high proof with this whiskey. There is an excellent mix of cinnamon, maple syrup, bread, and butter; corn and rye play together in the background. This whiskey reminded me of the flavor of a good homemade dinner roll. The finish is where the whiskey changes directions a bit, it is moderate and spicy with a chocolate flavor very similar to hot chocolate. Overall, this whiskey was delicious. It’s high proof gives you a burst of heat and spice but never dulls the flavors. I tried this whiskey neat and with a splash and I enjoyed it both ways. I was easily able to detect the flavors in the whiskey and was impressed as I’ve not had a whiskey that tasted quite like this. Barrell Whiskey is aged 7 years and bottled at barrel strength. It is priced at around $60.
History From The Brand: Our story is simple. Many exceptional whiskeys never reach the discerning palates of those who would most appreciate them. Barrell’s mission is to find and curate the best barrels and batches of whiskey, wherever they may be. Left alone, this product would likely be forgotten or blended with other whiskeys, forfeiting its unique flavor and style. To preserve the singular characteristics of each batch, we bottle all our whiskeys at cask strength. We take pride in our small part of preserving and presenting new and unique whiskeys to the people who enjoy them most.
We are not tied to recreating a single recipe or style. Every barrel and every batch we bring to you will be different. Barrell thrives on and embraces this freedom. The unpredictability of barrel aging is something to celebrate, not stifle. We, in essence, provide the stage on which the whiskey may speak for itself.
Note: A great compliment to these strong barrel bourbons would be a cigar with a lot of strength to match. Famous Smoke Shop recommends the Edicion Diamante line of Cigars from Cohiba, which is a full body smoke with some excellent wood undertones yet extremely smooth finish.
