The Art of Cooking with Michter’s Bourbon at the Kentucky Bourbon Affair

Experience a dining and interactive cooking event with renowned Chef de Cuisine Patrick Roney of The Oakroom.  The Oakroom is the award winning restaurant in Louisville’s Seelbach Hotel, which was chosen by author F. Scott Fitzgerald as the backdrop for the wedding of Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan in his novel The Great Gatsby. Chef Patrick will demystify the art of cooking with bourbon and you will leave with an understanding of how bourbon can complement a dish and tips for its use.  After participation in the preparation of your delicious bourbon inspired meal, you’ll sit down and enjoy it with signature bourbon cocktails made by a well known local mixologist.  Master Distiller Willie Pratt and Distiller Pam Heilmann will be at the event to talk Bourbon and share their favorite bourbon recipes.  Each guest will receive their very own Michter’s apron and the evening’s recipes.  This culinary experience will be held rooftop of the Frazier Museum with the Ohio River as a beautiful backdrop (event will move indoors in case of inclement weather).  Note: each guest will be required to fill out a questionnaire for the Chef to clarify any food allergies or dietary restrictions. J.R. Revelry Bourbon Review

IMG_1376

Name: J.R. Revelry Bourbon Whiskey

ABV: 45%

Proof: 90

Nose: Corn, Spice, Brown Sugar, Vanilla

Palate: Sweet corn, oak, fresh cinnamon, vanilla, and fresh fruit.

Finish: Moderate and straightforward with flavors of fresh ground cinnamon and oak.

Overall: J.R. Revelry is a unique bourbon with great flavor profile. This whiskey pours a medium amber color. It is straightforward in its flavors and has a good balance of sweet and spicy. The balance between sweet and spicy comes from the cinnamon and earth flavors up front with some unique underlying notes of fresh fruit. The finish is moderate and simple with the flavors of fresh ground cinnamon and oak. I enjoyed this whiskey neat, with a splash, and in a cocktail and I enjoyed it all three ways. Adding a splash of water helped bring out more of the flavors in the bourbon and made them a bit more distinctive. Overall, this is a smooth whiskey that I would recommend to anyone wanting to try something new or the beginning bourbon drinker who is looking for a great entry level whiskey. There are numerous new startups on the scene and some are hits and some are a miss, this one is a hit in my opinion.

History: J.R. Revelry is produced by La Bodega Internacional (LBI) out of Atlanta, Georgia but begins in Lawrenceburg, IN at the old Seagram Distillery. Their team in Nashville crafts all the bottles and the packaging materials. There is a short video here that explains the whiskey and story in full detail.

Syndicate 58/6 Whisky Review

IMG_9037

Name: Syndicate 58/6

Bottled By: New England Distillery

ABV: 43%

Proof: 86

Nose: Sweet corn, smoke, citrus, honey, almonds, and floral notes.

Palate: Rich caramel, vanilla, anise, oak, leather, nutmeg.

Finish: Long, with tart flavors of apricots and apples, and a lingering smoky, spicy flavor.

Overall: This is a fantastic whisky. It is full of character and leaves you wanting more from the first sip. The sweet and spicy flavors play very well together without being overly sweet or overly spicy. The finish is long with plenty of character and a wonderful aftertaste. I really enjoyed this whisky and the flavors that came with it. It is very smooth with just a slight burn to it. A great addition to any whisky lover’s shelf.

History: Syndicate 58/6 Premium Scotch Whisky was founded in 1966 by William Muir
(Bond 9) Limited (Founded in Leith, Scotland in 1823) and the original blend was
distilled in 1954 by Marshall Taplow (Established in London 1760) for their most
important customers.
In the United Kingdom Syndicate 58/6 is a private highly exclusive club made up of
discerning individuals who really appreciate a top quality Scotch Whisky. The
Syndicate members include Members of the House of Lords, High Court Judges and a
wide range of leading professionals from throughout the United Kingdom.
The quality and consistency of the blend is assured by using a ‘Solera’ system
whereby additional whiskies are blended with the older stock. They include 18
single malt whiskies and 4 single grain whiskies. The syndicate 58/6 still contains
small quantities of the original 1958 blend. It is finally married and matured in 4
year old Oloroso Sherry casks which give the whisky its exceptionally smooth and
distinctive taste.
Syndicate 58/6 Whisky is imported into the USA exclusively by Bespoke Spirits Inc.

Diageo Announces Plan for New Distillery in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Global liquor giant Diageo PLC on Thursday announced plans to build a new distillery in Kentucky amid a global boom in American whiskey sales.

The U.K.-based company called the $115 million project about 30 miles east of Louisville a significant investment in the state’s growing bourbon industry. It still needs approval from local government officials, but Diageo hopes to complete the project by the end of 2016.

A variety of current and future Diageo bourbon and whiskey brands would be distilled at the facility, with a production capacity of 750,000 9-liter cases per year.

“Diageo has a long tradition within the craft of whiskey-making, and we look forward to bringing this artisanship to the new distillery,” said Diageo North America President Larry Schwartz.

Diageo’s brands include Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Guinness, Bulleit Bourbon and George Dickel Tennessee Whisky. Global rival Brown-Forman Corp., maker of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, is headquartered in Louisville.

December 2013 Whiskey of the Month

December 2013

We are very pleased to announce that Basil Hayden’s  has been selected as our December 2013 Whiskey of the Month. Please see our full review below. Basil Hayden’s is one of the small batch whiskeys from Beam.

Basil Hayden's Our Rating: 95%

Basil Hayden’s
Our Rating: 95%

Name: Basil Hayden

Bottled By: Beam Inc.

ABV: 40%

Proof: 80

Age: 8 Years

Our Rating: 95%

Notes: Basil Hayden’s is a light bodied bourbon. In fact it is the lightest bodied of the the small batch bourbons in the Jim Beam Family. The taste is light, refreshing, but not complex. It has a nice light taste of honey as well as a hint of black pepper. Very simple flavor profile and a nice moderate finish with an exceptional after taste. It is a nice Bourbon for what it is but if you prefer a stronger Bourbon you may want to pass this one up. On the rocks this Bourbon becomes a little light, while it will still maintain its flavor we prefer this one neat.

History: This Bourbon takes its name from Basil Hayden Sr. who was a Maryland Catholic and also a distiller. Hayden Sr. led a group of 25 Catholic families from Maryland to what is now Nelson County, Kentucky in 1785. Hayden donated land to the first Catholic church west of the Alleghenies and the first Catholic church in what is now the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In his mash bill he was known to use a larger amount of rye.

Double Oaked Bourbon & Salted Brown Sugar Caramel candle from Sydney Hale Co. I must admit that I am not much of a candle burner, but once this was suggested from one our readers that it was incredible I decided to try it myself. It's got a great scent to it and a 50 hour burn time.

Pennypacker Bourbon Review

Pennypacker Bourbon Our Rating: 84%

Pennypacker Bourbon

Name: Pennypacker Bourbon

ABV: 40%

Proof: 80

Our Rating: 84%

Notes: On the nose Pennypacker has a nice wheat and spice scent to it. At first sip you can taste the wheat, some spices, and a noticeable anise flavor. The finish is short with a slight burn and similar flavors of wheat and anise. There is not a lot of flavor with this one. I tried this neat, on the rocks, and in a cocktail. It was definitely enjoyed best in a cocktail and did pretty well. For the price of around $22.00 there are probably a few better options in this category that most would opt for. I think if the price were lower it would be great for cocktails.
