Name: Basil Hayden Toast
ABV: 40%
Proof: 80
Nose: Pralines, Chocolate, Oak, Vanilla
Palate: Dry Oak, Cinnamon, Caramel, Anise
Finish: Long and dry with cinnamon and oak being the main flavors lingering
Overall: Basil Hayden Toast is an enjoyable bourbon. On the nose there is a sweet nutty aroma which reminded me of pralines. Chocolate, oak, and vanilla combined with the praline aroma led me to believe I was about to dive into a sweet bourbon. At first sip I was greeted with a dry oak and and spicy cinnamon flavor with some caramel and anise flavors mixed in as well. This is definitely a dry whiskey and not sweet like I imagined it would be. The flavors are genuine and distinctive. Anise was present but not overpowering. The finish is long and dry with cinnamon and oak being the most upfront flavors. There were some hints of vanilla and caramel on the back end as it faded. This was a smooth whiskey with little burn.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. Although I prefer higher proof offerings, this was a welcomed change. I have fond memories of regular Basil Hayden’s over the years so I was pleased to give this one a go. As I mentioned above, I really thought this was going to be a sweet bourbon based on the aroma and although I enjoyed it, it really surprised me. Enjoy this one neat or with a small splash to bring out the flavors. There are plenty of great offerings in this price point but if you enjoy lower proof whiskies, I would give this one a try.
