Name: Charred Oak Rye
Bottled By: Off The Clock Spirits
ABV: 40%
Proof: 80
Age: 18 Months
Notes: On the nose there is strong vanilla scent which mellowed quite a bit as it opened for a few minutes. At first sip there is a faint corn taste with some smooth rye, vanilla, and honey flavors. The finish is moderate, light, and smooth with sweet caramel and butterscotch flavors, reminiscent to Werther’s Original candies. This is a very sweet rye whiskey and an easy sipper. I was very surprised at how sweet it is. The first time I tried this, I couldn’t quite put my finger on what flavors I tasted. The corn taste is very faint but it was noticeable and I enjoyed it. Charred Oak rye does not go through a chill filtering process which makes it slightly cloudy and I believe adds a little flavor. I tried this neat and with a splash and I enjoyed it best neat. This is a very light and sweet whiskey and adding a splash seemed to mellow out a bit too much for my tastes. I do wish it was a bit stronger but that is just a personal preference. It is available for around $40 at most places and I think that is a fair price for what you get. Don’t be afraid of the young age with this one, it is a good whiskey with a very unique flavor profile.
